DESCRIPTION
Remarkable collection of seven autographed T206 tobacco cards. Despite the fact that T206 white-border tobacco cards have been so popular and widely collected since 1909, signed examples are extremely rare. Few collectors had either the inclination or opportunity to get cards signed. Autograph collectors had many other options to get different types of items signed and rarely had cards at all, and card collectors were usually only interested in cards, and rarely sought autographs. If the opportunity to get an autograph arose, few fans happened to have a T206 card of the given player handy. To get a T206 card signed took planning or was accomplished with great effort by mail. The interest in autographed cards is relatively recent, and with the passing long ago of players from the 1910 era, every T206 card that is signed is unusual and noteworthy. A few long-lived players were known to have been presented with many T206 cards to sign, but they are the exception. Occasionally we see a signed Rube Marquard T206, for example. (One is even included in this collection.) Rube Marquard was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1971 and at that time it occurred to a few collectors to have him sign T206 cards, but most players were simply never presented with original tobacco cards to sign. Offered here is an outstanding collection of seven signed T206 cards, representing six different players. Unless otherwise noted, all of the cards have been signed on the front in blue ink (grading “9/10”) by the respective player pictured. The first Doyle signed T206 card listed below is particularly special, with a fascinating story and significance to the T206 set. 1) Joe Doyle (N. Y., hands above head); signed by Larry Doyle; Gd. This is an extremely fascinating signed card as it directly relates to one of card collecting's most valuable and legendary rarities. This T206 "Doyle N. Y. Nat'l." card actually pictures Joe Doyle of the New York Americans. Apparently the American Tobacco Company originally got their Doyles mixed up, thinking the image of Joe Doyle was Larry Doyle of the New York Nationals, and originally identified him as with the "N.Y. Nat'l" team. When it was realized that an error had been made, that the image on this card was actually Joe Doyle of the New York Americans, rather than correcting the league designation (changing it from "Nat'l" to "Amer."), the league designation was simply removed entirely from the printing plate, because it was easier. Thus almost all known Doyle hands-over-head pitching pose cards in the T206 set are identified with just "N.Y.," as the error cards identifying the league the designation as "Nat'l" were corrected almost immediately. This explains the great rarity of the "Nat'l" variation. When this card was presented long ago to Larry Doyle for signing, even he got his Doyles confused! Larry Doyle has signed the image of Joe Doyle, at the same time creating an extremely interesting (and possibly unique) item of great significance directly relating to one of the T206 set's most legendary and valuable cards. This signed card really tells the story of the rare T206 Doyle. Fewer than five authentic T206 Doyle Nat'l cards are known to exist. 2) Larry Doyle; (N. Y. Nat’l., with bat); Gd. 3) Rube Marquard (portrait); signed in blue felt-tip pen; Fr, with a tack hole along the top. 4) Fred Parent; Fr-Gd, with adhesive residue and paper loss on the reverse. 5) Davy Jones; graded Fair 20 by SGC. 6) Paddy Livingston; graded Fair 20 by SGC. 7) George McBride; Gd. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 7 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+.
