Curt Flood Adirondack block-letter model "236B" bat (last name only) dating from the 1961-1967 manufacturing period. Graded A8.5 by MEARS, one of only two graded at this level, with none graded higher. The bat displays heavy use, mainly along the barrel, including numerous ball marks, deeply embedded stitch marks, rack and cleat marks, and grain swelling. There are a few tiny chips in the area around the center brand. Flood's uniform number ("21") is written on the knob in faded black marker. Although not yet a member of the Hall of Fame, Curt Flood remains one of the most important figures in all of baseball history due to his historic lawsuit against organized baseball on January 16, 1970. In his suit, Flood openly challenged organized baseball's reserve clause (which effectively kept a player with one club throughout his career), likening the concept of "being owned [by a club]" to "being a slave 100 years ago." Although he eventually lost the case at the Supreme Court level, his suit paved the way for modern free agency just a few short years later. Flood was a member of the St. Louis Cardinals between the years 1961 and 1967, at which time he was considered one of the top defensive outfielders of his day. Flood won seven consecutive Gold Glove Awards between the years 1963 and 1969 and appeared in three All-Star Games. He was also a fine hitter, batting over .300 on six separate occasions, including a career high .335 in 1967. He finished his career with a .293 lifetime average. Both for his on- and off-field contributions to the game, a very strong case can be made that Flood is a worthy candidate for future induction into the Hall of Fame. Length: 34.5 inches. Weight: 31.1 ounces. Graded A8.5 by MEARS (base grade of 5, plus 3 points for use and 1 point for the uniform number on the knob, but minus a half point for the tiny chips near the center brand). This is one of only two Curt Flood bats listed in the MEARS census, both of which are graded A8.5. This bat has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat and jersey authenticators David Bushing and/or Troy Kinunen.
