Stunning and extremely rare studio cabinet of Harry Wright (facing right pose), the "Father of Professional Baseball," dating from his managerial tenure with the Philadelphia Quakers, circa 1886. This is a particularly interesting cabinet photograph of Wright featuring a striking portrait pose. While this pose does not appear on any other card to the best of our knowledge, it has a strong and fascinating connection to the N172 Old Judge set. This portrait was obviously taken at the very same time, at the same sitting but just a few moments before or after, as the photograph used on one of Harry Wright's N172 Old Judge portrait cards. While it is not an N173 Old Judge cabinet card, it has much in common with Harry Wright's cabinet card from that issue, and in fact may be slightly rarer. According to The Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards, nine different cards are known from this set. Harry Wright is the key card from this series comprised of exclusively Philadelphia National League players. The photographer's credit, "MacIntire - 1528 Ridge Ave., Phila.," appears on the mount. Harry Wright ranks among the most influential baseball figures of the nineteenth century. In 1869 he founded and managed the Cincinnati Red Stockings, baseball's first all-professional team. He later managed Boston's entry in both the National Association and National League, winning seven league titles combined over the course of eleven seasons with the club. He also enjoyed successful runs as manager of Providence and Philadelphia, before retiring in 1893. Wright is credited with developing a number of important innovations still in use today, including the use of hand signals to his players, the constant repositioning of fielders in response to batter's tendencies, pre-game batting and fielding practice, and the use of statistics with regard to managerial strategy. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1953. The photo has outstanding clarity and contrast and is in Excellent condition. The mount (4.25 x 6.5 inches) exhibits light corner wear and two areas of what appear to be surface paper loss on the reverse. Encapsulated as Authentic by PSA. Reserve $500.
