DESCRIPTION
Sherry Magee was a popular outfielder with the Philadelphia Phillies during the early 1900s whose many accomplishments include one batting title, three RBI crowns, over 2,000 hits, and a .291 lifetime average. Despite those impressive numbers, his name would be largely forgotten by collectors today if not for a printing error on his T206 tobacco card. When first issued, the card identified him on the front as "Magie" instead of Magee. The mistake was quickly rectified, but not before a small number of error cards had already been distributed in packs of cigarettes. Today, few examples remain and the "Magie" error card is considered one of card collecting's most legendary rarities. While any Magie error card is very desirable, this particular example has a special provenance. This card was personally owned by famed collector Barry Halper and was one of the cornerstones of his vast card collection. Like a number of the rarest and most valuable cards in his collection, Barry housed the card in a custom-made green leather folding solander case for optimum presentation. This card has remained in its case exactly as it was purchased at the famous Halper auction in 1999. The front of the case is gilt stamped "Barry Halper Baseball Archives," while the spine is similarly stamped "Sherry Magie - T-206 Error." Barry kept this card, along with examples of the T206 Wagner, the T206 Plank, and the 1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth rookie card in a secret compartment hidden in a wall, which would magically open when one of his guests uttered the password. The card, which is slightly off center, displays rounded corners and a minor horizontal crease that runs from border to border along the bottom portion of the card. Advertising for Piedmont appears on the reverse. While technically in Good condition, the card presents extremely well and represents a fine example of this great rarity. Barry Halper's T206 Wagner card now resides in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Few of his other key baseball cards have surfaced since the historic sale of his collection in 1999. This is an exceptional opportunity to own not only one of the hobby's true gems, but one that also comes with the unique provenance of once being part of the most legendary private baseball collection ever assembled. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000.
