Extremely rare Barnum & Bailey circus poster heralding the appearance of "Mooney's Giants-The Famous Elephant Base-Ball Team." A prize in both the circus and baseball collecting fields, the colorful half-sheet poster (29 x 19.25 inches) features an extraordinary illustration of the talented pachyderms playing baseball, complete with a fully equipped catcher and umpire. Copyright 1913 by the Strobridge Litho Company of Cincinnati and New York. This is one of the rarest of all circus posters, and also one of the most delightful, fun, and interesting baseball-related display pieces ever produced. Featuring exceptional graphics, this poster generates positive attention and a positive emotional reaction in an across-the-board manner that few display pieces of any kind (baseball-related or otherwise) can match. A different example of this classic poster in similar high grade appeared as the cover lot in Robert Edward Auctions' June 1996 auction. That example was purchased by special request specifically for donation to the Hall of Fame, and is now on prominent display in Cooperstown as part of the Hall of Fame's permanent collection. Since the 1996 auction, we have only seen two additional examples surface: This exceptional near-perfect example, and a second extremely attractive example with slight restoration that appeared in the 2006 REA auction. This poster is a magnificent gem. It has been linen-backed, which is of course ideal for preservation and display, and has had a small corner tear repair that is of no consequence (mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy). The poster has a Near Mint to Mint appearance. This is an outstanding display piece with a rare universal appeal. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. |
