| DESCRIPTION |
Graded VG 3 by PSA. Sherry Magee was a popular outfielder with the Philadelphia Phillies during the early 1900s whose many accomplishments include one batting title, three RBI crowns, over 2,000 hits, and a .291 lifetime average. Despite those impressive numbers, his name would be largely forgotten by collectors today if not for a printing error on his T206 tobacco card. When first issued, the card identified him on the front as "Magie" instead of Magee. The mistake was quickly rectified, but not before a small number of error cards had already been distributed in packs of cigarettes. Today, few examples remain and the "Magie" error card is universally recognized as one of the T206 set's rarest cards. This is a very pleasing medium-grade example of this famous error card. The card is very clean and extremely well centered, with bold colors, a small area of slight background wear, a crisp, perfectly focused image, the slightest remnant of a pressed surface crease in the upper left, and evenly rounded corners. The reverse of the card features a crisply printed advertisement for Piedmont Cigarettes (150 Subjects, Factory No. 25 which has slightly been scratched off the surface). This is an extremely pleasing mid-grade example, with an exceptional appearance, of one of the hobby's most legendary rarities. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++.
