Graded VG 40 by SGC. Rare example of the 1911 T205 Gold Border "Cycle 1 Loss" printing variation of Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson. This is a relatively new discovery that has only just recently been recognized by The Standard Catalog and grading companies as a checklist addition to the T205 set. The “Cycle 1 Loss” variation error card is defined by the missing “1” from Mathewson's stats on the card’s reverse (Mathewson's pitching stats are listed as "37-1" for the 1908 season, when in actuality he lost eleven games in the 1908 season). This back variation appears only on T205 Mathewson cards with a Cycle Cigarettes back. The card is very well centered, with evenly rounded corners, very little chipping to the gold borders, with a crisp portrait and a very clean surface. The back is perfectly clean with crisp, bold black printing. Both the extreme cleanness of the reverse and the boldness of its printing, of course, are particularly desirable and ideal qualities for this variation card. This is an extremely attractive example that, as a new checklist addition, is needed in virtually every T205 master set. Because of its recent discovery and scarcity, there is no consensus on the value of this card. As always, we are confident the auction process will provide clarity. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
