| DESCRIPTION |
|
Highly ornate baseball trophy dating to the 1888/1889 season. The silver-colored trophy features a representation of a baseball (complete with figure-eight stitch pattern) supported by four crossed bats, in the center of which is a floral display. The circular base is supported by four feet featuring a decorative interlocking floral pattern. Elaborately engraved on both the top and bottom with numerous accent designs. The engraving on the ball reads "Presented/By/ H. H. Kiffe/To The/Brooklyn Amateur B. B. Association/1888 1889." The base is engraved "Won by the/Resolute Base Ball/Club." The top of the trophy features a removable lid. Herman H. Kiffe was the proprietor of Kiffe Sporting Goods, which was located at 318 Fulton Street in Brooklyn, New York. This is one of the earliest baseball trophies we have seen, and also one of the most attractive and elaborately designed. The trophy (18.5 inches in height and approximately 8.5 inches at the widest part of the base) displays heavy surface wear and tarnishing that is commensurate with its age, but all of the engraving remains legible. Tremendous for display! In Very Good condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. |
