DESCRIPTION
When Jackie Robinson broke into the Majors in 1947, numerous pins were produced for sale at stadium concession stands to memorialize the event and to allow fans to express their support. The late 1940s and early 1950s were the heyday of the "stadium pin," so in the years that followed his Major League debut, additional Jackie Robinson pins were also issued. Aside from Babe Ruth, perhaps no player has ever been the subject of more pins (and more interest from pin collectors) than Jackie Robinson. Because of the nature of pins, advanced collectors know it is always possible that significant new discoveries will surface, but these discoveries are naturally very few and far between. We thought we had seen and handled every Jackie Robinson pinback that had ever been produced but when sorting through the Ron Menchine Collection we found that Ron had one that was, to the best of our knowledge, previously unknown. Offered here is an exceedingly rare, never-before-seen, Jackie Robinson pin, most likely dating from the late 1940s. The pin, which displays no image, is simply lettered in red and reads "With the help of Jackie Robinson the Dodgers will win/We are for Jackie." A union label is printed along the base, as is "Copyright By E. S." Although it is undated, the fact that was produced to show one's support for Jackie indicates that it was almost certainly issued very shortly after he broke the color barrier in 1947, a time when he needed all the support fans could muster. This is a tremendous high-quality addition to the universe of known 1947-era Jackie Robinson pinbacks. The pin (2 inches in diameter) displays a minor foxing along the perimeter at 5:00. This is a very well made pin with a tight collet. The reverse displays normal oxidation and a hint of adhesive residue. In Excellent condition overall. From the Ron Menchine Collection. Reserve $400. Estimate (open).
