DESCRIPTION
These two unique replica jersey were created with vintage materials in order to more accurately commemorate Joe DiMaggio's early career. Joe DiMaggio later signed (7/8") each jersey in the collar as a favor for Barry Halper. Neither of these jerseys would ever fool an expert, anymore than a modern-day replica would, nor are they intended to, but at a glance both look very much like authentic Joe DiMaggio 1930s style Yankees road jerseys. It should be emphasized that these replica jerseys are much different in composition than the many Mitchell & Ness replica jerseys commonly seen in the hobby. Mitchell & Ness jerseys are produced using modern-day materials. These garments were created using vintage flannel jerseys from the period as a foundation, thus giving them the true look and feel of a 1930s Yankees jersey. The lettering, numerals, and stitching in the collar too were carefully applied to mimic those used on actual Yankee jerseys. The first was made to commemorate DiMaggio's 1936 rookie season. The gray, road flannel jersey is lettered "New York" across the chest and features the number "9" on the reverse. During his rookie year DiMaggio wore number "9" (he did not wear number "5" until the following season) and this jersey reflects that one-year-only number style. All of the letters and numerals are crafted in navy blue felt and match the design of the period. A vintage "Spalding" tag and size tag appear in the collar. "J DiMaggio" is chain-stitched in red directly to the right of the Spalding tag. The year, "36," is chain-stitched in red along the interior rear tail. Heavy to moderate wear is displayed throughout including a small hole in the rear tail. The original uniform number has been removed (an outline is still barely visible) and replaced with the current number nine. The second garment, also made to resemble a 1930s style jersey, bears his more familiar number "5." The gray, road flannel jersey is lettered "New York" across the chest and features the number "5" on the reverse. All of the letters and numerals are crafted in navy blue felt and match the design of the period. "J DiMaggio" is chain-stitched in blue upon a white strip tag in the collar. A manufacturer's tag has been removed from the collar. Little to no wear is evident and there is a small stain in the area of the upper left shoulder. These are both unique Joe DiMaggio signed pieces. The display quality of them is far superior to that of modern-day replicas and their vintage nature makes them potentially very desirable for those collectors who normally shun modern, mass-produced, Joe DiMaggio signed pieces. From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+.
