1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card of Dave Orr of Brooklyn. Orr was a major nineteenth-century star and universally regarded as one of the premier power hitters in the Major Leagues throughout his eight-year career (1883-1890). This card features a striking photo of Orr with hands outstretched, ready to catch a ball at first. This is very attractive card has ideal contrast, which makes the copyright and player identification within the photo more prominent than on most Old Judge cards. Extremely clean both front and back, with particularly strong photo contrast and detail. A very tiny almost imperceptible background imperfection (which appears to be an abrasion) to the lower left of the "Copyright 1887 Goodwin & Company" identification is very subtle and does not detract, and is the cause of this card being encapsulated by SGC as "Authentic" rather than being assigned a numerical grade. There are no creases, and virtually no corner or edge wear; the only “flaw” to the piece is the tiny abrasion, which we are certain is period. The cabinet card is otherwise in extraordinary Excellent to Mint condition. This is a magnificent, very high quality Old Judge cabinet, with an exceptionally strong visual appeal. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. |
