DESCRIPTION
Graded POOR 10 by SGC. E107 Breisch-Williams card of catcher Chief Zimmer with the Philadelphia Phillies of the National League. Zimmer played only one year (1903) for the Phillies, which was his last season in the Major Leagues. "Chief" Zimmer was a teammate of Lou Sockalexis, the Native American ballplayer who gave the Cleveland Indians their name; however, despite his nickname, Zimmer himself was not actually a Native American. Charles Zimmer once captained a team called the Poughkeepsie Indians, and forever after was known as "Chief" Zimmer. In addition to being a star catcher and one of baseball's first entrepreneurs (Zimmer is well known to collectors for his famous "Zimmer Game"), he was the first catcher to play directly behind the batter on every play. Previously, catchers would move farther back of the plate with runners on base. Bright and clean, with evenly rounded corners, with a tiny surface chip at the top, centered approximately 30/70 left to right, and with a slight diamond cut. The reverse has a few minor spots of surface paper loss from scrapbook removal. Technically grades Poor but is a great looking card with a much stronger overall appearance. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
