Superb 1887 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card featuring Jack Rowe (#394-3 pose) of the Detroit Wolverines. All N173 Old Judge cabinets are naturally rare, but this is a particularly noteworthy example in that it has an extremely rare black mount. According to The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890), the definitive book on Old Judges by Jay Miller, Joe Gonsowski, and Richard Masson, "The vast majority of cabinet mounts are yellow in color. However, cabinets have also been found with brown, black, pink, and (in a few rare cases) red mounts." The image on this card is extremely bold, with extraordinary contrast and tremendous detail. Very bright, crisp, and clean, both front and back. Encapsulated as Authentic by SGC (submitted by REA) due to a tiny spot of color added near the bottom edge on the reverse, the card is in otherwise Ex-Mt condition, and it is easy to see that this is a magnificent N173 example. This is only the fifth black-mount N173 that we can recall offering in the last two decades! This is an extremely attractive, exceedingly rare N173 black-mount example, and an ideal sample of this significant nineteenth-century rarity from one of the most revered and substantial of all nineteenth-century baseball-card issues.
