Graded MINT 9 by PSA. Presented is an almost-beyond-words stunning, ultra high-grade example of Hall of Famer Mike "King" Kelly (pose #254-5) from the legendary N172 Old Judge set. This is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive and remarkable Old Judge cards of any player in existence. The fact that it features legendary Hall of Famer "King" Kelly makes it of particularly special note, far and above its obvious extraordinary visual appeal. As can easily be seen, this card possesses tremendous photo contrast. Old Judges, of course, normally don't look like this! PSA and SGC have combined to evaluate 11,959 Old Judges to date. Only a dozen cards (of any subject) have ever graded MINT or better between the two companies (eleven MINT and one SGC GEM MINT). This card is an example of the ideal N172 Old Judge in terms of condition and photo contrast, of which few very exist. Kelly, who is identified as "$10,000 Kelly" on the offered card, is one of the most prominent of all nineteenth-century Hall of Famers in addition to being perhaps the era's most popular figure. Kelly earned his nickname when he was sold from Boston to Chicago following the 1887 season for a-then-unheard-of sum. Kelly has always been an extremely desirable Old Judge subject, and he appears in eleven different poses throughout the N172 and N173 cabinet sets. As suggested by the remarkable MINT 9 grade, this example is extraordinary in all respects. It is perfectly clean, with four square corners and near-perfect centering (ever-so-slightly to the bottom). The photo contrast, as noted, is virtually flawless. This is especially noteworthy as grading companies do not take into consideration the strength of photo contrast when assigning a grade. It is therefore possible to have a very highly graded card that has a washed out or poor-quality photo. The offered example is the ideal for what collectors aspire to see in ultra high-grade Old Judges. The blank reverse is entirely clean. The appeal of any Old Judge card (or any card for that matter) is naturally subjective, but in our opinion this is without a doubt one of the most attractive N172 Old Judge cards of King Kelly in existence! Value is also always subjective, and this is especially the case with a card such as this for which there are almost no comparisons. One of the most popular Hall of Famers, from one of the most popular nineteenth-century card sets, in an unparalleled, almost unheard of, grade. It is an extraordinary world-class example of one of the key nineteenth-century and Old Judge Hall of Famers and would be a significant highlight in even the most advanced Old Judge, nineteenth-century, or Hall of Famer card collection. Opening Bid $25,000. Estimate $100,000+.
