Presented is a rare PC760 Rose Company Postcard of Patsy Flaherty from the Boston Nationals with an unusual overprint on the reverse. "Overprinting" is a term commonly used to refer to the rare practice of a company taking cards already printed and adding advertising, in the form of printing or ink stamp, to allow the cards to function as an advertising vehicle at a relatively modest cost compared to creating and printing a new set. In this case, the overprint on this PC760 Rose Postcard of Flaherty is that of an appointment schedule used by “Jacob G. Shirk,” the owner of a tobacco company in Pennsylvania, to notify his clients of future sales calls. The overprint as printed reads “Our Mr._____________ - will call on you_____________ - Yours respectfully – Jacob G. Shirk.” Over the years, we have seen several Rose Postcards with very elaborate advertising overprints, but never one with this type of an overprint! The overprint is boldly printed in black ink and the intended blank spaces have been filled in with the name of a company representative (purple ink stamp) and a date (May 3 written in pencil). Graded FAIR 20 by SGC, the card has light wear on the corners and edges, and no creases or wrinkles. The postcard has been addressed and mailed. This is an extremely attractive sample with an unusual overprint from one of the era's most classic sets. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
