Extremely rare pair of candy cards from the 1909 E92 Croft's Candy and Croft's Cocoa sets, each graded and encapsulated by SGC (submitted by REA). Both cards have advertising for products issued by the Croft & Allen Co. of Philadelphia on the reverse, featuring either a Croft's Candy or a Croft's Swiss Milk Cocoa back (along with an illustration of the Croft's Swiss Milk Cocoa package design). The same player designs were also issued with advertising on the reverse for Nadja Caramels and John H. Dockman & Sons "Base Ball Gum." All of them are catalogued together as "E92." Both varieties of Croft's cards were probably handed out as advertising items to promote Croft & Allen's candy and cocoa products. The back of the cocoa cards features the message "Served Hot at our fountain 11 South 15th St. Montague & Co. Philadelphia, Pa." The fact that the advertisement refers to a specific Philadelphia location suggests a very regional distribution, and this no doubt accounts for their rarity. Both cards are graded and encapsulated by SGC. 1) Red Kleinow (Croft's Cocoa, VG/EX+ 55, 1 of 1, highest graded). Flawless image set against a striking multicolor background, with even wear to the four corners, and centered slightly to the right. The boldly printed advertisement on the reverse is centered to the extreme left. 2) Heinie Zimmerman (Croft's Candy, black back, GOOD+ 2.5). Flawless image set against a striking red background, with even wear to the four corners, and centered to the extreme bottom (nearly miscut). Clean, boldly printed reverse. This is a very attractive pair of these unusual and seldom-seen cards. Total: 2 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
