Graded VG 40 by SGC. Stunning 1887 N172 Old Judge portrait example of Cap Anson. The offered example features an extremely strong portrait of the nineteenth century's greatest star. This is a newly discovered card that has never before been seen in the modern collecting world. This card was one of the highlights of a large totally untouched collection of N172 cards consigned to this auction, which was saved for decades by the family of the original owner. The card has a little general wear, including slightly rounded corners, and very light soiling on the reverse, but no creases, and a very impressive overall appearance, especially for the grade. The quality of the photograph is very strong for this card (photo quality is often light on Anson Old Judges), and with excellent contrast between the portrait and the background (which is also sometimes a problem with this card). There is a very thin line of residue (barely visible, appears to be from a rubber band) across Anson's necktie, which is responsible for this card being downgraded from a much higher grade. Technically mid-grade but with a far stronger appearance, this is an extremely impressive N172 Cap Anson, one of the most important cards in the Old Judge set and one of the nineteenth century's most desirable and classic cards.
