Graded VG/EX+ 55 by SGC. Scarce and desirable "script series" N172 Old Judge card of Hall of Famer “Smiling” Mickey Welch of the New York Giants (pose #486-1). We believe the distinctive "script series" cards were issued in 1886 (although it is possible they date from early 1887). This particular card has the extra special distinction of being a "transition card" because the Goodwin and Company line at the bottom is in the format of a later series issued in 1887. This is only the second known example of Welch (pose #486-1) in this rare format combining elements of the script series with elements of the short number series that followed. Welch was one of the most legendary Hall of Fame pitchers of the nineteenth century. He was the Major League's third 300-game winner. During his thirteen Major League seasons, he won twenty or more games nine times, including seven straight years. The card displays light, even corner wear, a small surface indentation near Welch's left arm, and is centered to the left. The back of the card has a light surface wrinkle across the lower portion of the card. An extremely high-quality example of "Smiling" Mickey Welch worthy of even the most advanced N172, Hall of Fame, or nineteenth-century card collection. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open).
