Superb pair of cards from the legendary N172 Old Judge series, each notable for displaying pieces of another card on the top or side, a phenomenon that is far less common with N172s than other issues. Issued by Goodwin & Company from 1887 to 1890, N172 Old Judges are universally recognized as the premier nineteenth-century baseball-card set. The offered cards of Jack Clements (pose #79-3) and Emil Geiss (pose #182-4) are each professionally graded and encapsulated GOOD+ 35 by SGC. Both exhibit strong photo contrast, crisp images, light wear at the corners (slightly more to the bottom two corners of Clements), and clean blank reverses. The Clements card displays a "Goodwin & Co., New York" copyright line at top (from the card above it on the sheet) and the Geiss card displays a small sliver of the image and border area along the left edge (from the card next to it on the sheet). These printing oddities will likely be of great interest to N172 scholars and collectors. If nothing else, these are two extremely attractive examples from the most popular nineteenth-century set ever produced. Total: 2 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
