Extremely rare Joseph Hall team cabinet photograph (4.25 x 6.5 inches) featuring the Brooklyn Bridegrooms of the American Association posed in front of the stadium grandstand. Joseph Hall team cabinets have long been revered by collectors as among the most highly prized of all nineteenth-century cabinet issues, and are universally regarded as the premier team cabinet-card series of the era. This is an exceptional example! The photograph is particularly striking, with fans in their bowler hats clearly visible in the stands in the background. Along with individual player identifications, which correspond to numbers on their respective images, the mount is captioned: "Joseph Hall, Photo., Brooklyn, N.Y. - Brooklyn Ball Club, 1888." The photograph includes fourteen players, among them two of the most outstanding of all nineteenth-century non-Hall of Famers: Bob Caruthers and Adonis Terry. This example is in outstanding overall condition. It is bright, crisp, and clean, with superb photo contrast and detail, strong corners (slightly more wear to the lower left), light foxing along the bottom of the mount, and an image centered slightly to the top. The blank reverse is entirely clean, with only a blank-ink stamp in the center that would cause it to grade modestly if submitted for professional grading. This is the first example of a Brooklyn Joseph Hall team cabinet that we have offered in twenty years, and it is the first example that we can recall seeing offered publicly in the last decade! This is an extraordinary card, which would be a highlight in any advanced collection! Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+.
