In 1956, Emmett Kelly took leave from his regular job as a clown with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus to spend a year at Ebbetts Field in the persona of the Dodgers beloved mascot, the "Brooklyn Bum." Offered here is a rare and extraordinary large-format sepia-toned photo capturing the sad-faced Kelly in an especially poignant moment as he signs an autograph for a young fan in the stadium runway. Photos of Kelly during his yearlong stay in Brooklyn are scarce, especially large-format examples such as this. It also has the special provenance of originating from the personal collection of former Dodgers mound ace Clem Labine. The photo (8.5 x 13 inches) displays a few minor surface wrinkles and is in Excellent condition overall. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 15.5 x 20 inches. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open).
