Complete set of all eight baseball premiums from the 1937 and 1938 Dixie Lids series. These full-color large-format premiums were issued in conjunction with the round 1937 and 1938 Dixie Cup Lid ice-cream top series. The beautiful artwork and rich color of the premiums make them one of the most striking and distinctive of all 1930s issues. They are also quite rare. However, considering how substantial they are, Dixie Lid premiums have received very little attention from collectors, in part due to the fact that they are so large compared to standard cards, and also because they cannot be encapsulated for grading (although this has very recently changed with the introduction of large-format holders by Beckett). A case could be made that they represent one of the best values among all 1930s issues. The 1937 and 1938 Dixie Lid premium sets each feature twenty-four subjects, including four baseball players in each set. (Other subjects include various entertainers two football stars, and a tennis star) Presented are all four baseball players from each set (plus the tennis premium from the 1937 set and the two football premiums from the 1938 set). 1) 1937 Dixie Lids Premiums Complete Sport Set (5): Charlie Gehringer (Vg-Ex), Gabby Hartnett (Vg-Ex), Carl Hubbell (Ex), Joe Medwick (Vg-Ex), and Bill Tilden (tennis Ex). 2) 1938 Dixie Lids Premiums Complete Sport Set (6): Sammy Baugh (football, Pr-Fr), Bob Feller (upper left corner attached with glue, otherwise Fr), Jimmy Foxx (Fr-Gd due to small tear at bottom border), Carl Hubbell (Gd), Wally Moses (Vg-Ex), and Bronko Nagurski (football, Gd due to small tear at top border).
