Outstanding collection of fifteen rare circa 1888 tobacco premium albums, all issued by Allen & Ginter. This collection represents a near-complete run, missing only ten albums for a complete set of A&G tobacco-premium albums. In the 1880s, in addition to insert cards, tobacco companies also offered special albums available only by mail in exchange for coupons (usually 75 or 100) which were packed with tobacco, one coupon per pack. Each premium album features images of all the subjects (usually 50 different) featured in a given set, along with additional background artwork. These souvenir albums were the top prizes offered by the tobacco companies, and have long been highly valued by collectors. These albums feature a diverse range of topics, including birds, fish, military figures, famous inventors, etc. Many collectors are familiar with the few albums featuring baseball players as they are very popular and expensive. The nonsport albums are just as scarce, yet far more reasonable in price. This substantial collection consists of the following albums (all have their original binding string unless otherwise noted): 1) A3 Birds of America (6 x 9 inches). The birdcage-shaped album is composed of nine pages featuring birds, an advertising page, plus two covers, all attached by a round metal clasp. Front cover is detached from the metal clasp. 2) A4 Birds of the Tropics (9 x 6 inches). Fr condition due to pencil notation on the front cover. 3) A5 City Flags (8.5 x 7.5 inches). Fr condition due to pencil writing on the front cover. 4) A6 Decorations from Different Nations (6 x 9.25 inches). Fr condition due to ink marks on front cover. 5) A7 Fish from American Waters (9.25 x 6 inches). Fr condition due to paper loss on both covers. 6) A9 Game Birds (8.5 x 6 inches). Fr condition due to rubber ink stamp on front cover. 7) A10 General Government and State Capitol Buildings (9.25 x 6 inches). Small spot of paper loss on back cover, otherwise Vg+. 8) A12 Racing Colors of the World (jockeys; 8.25 x 6.25 inches) Fr-Gd. 9) A13 Song Birds of the World (9 x 6 inches). Fr condition due to pencil notation on an interior page. 10) A15 World's Beauties, 2nd Series (6 x 8 inches). Fr condition due to ink notation on the front cover and a chip missing on the back cover. 11) A20 George Washington (6 x 9-1/4 inches). Fr condition. 12) A21 Napoleon (9-1/4 x 6 inches). Fr condition due to paper loss on both covers. 13) A22 Our Navy (9-1/8 x 5-7/8 inches). Original binding string is detached but accompanies the album, otherwise in Pr-Fr condition. 14) A23 Paris Exhibition 1889 (6 x 9-1/4 inches). Poor condition due to the front cover being detached and the back cover missing. 15) A25 World's Inventors (9-1/4 x 6 inches). Fr condition due to corner missing on front cover. As is often the case with these albums, most have some cover flaws and this is the cause for much of the downgrading. In most cases the interior pages are much better than suggested by the overall grade assigned each album. This is an extremely impressive and substantial group of nonsport tobacco premium albums, including many very scarce titles. Total: 15 albums. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
