Rare real-photo postcard capturing a game in progress at Cleveland’s League Park in 1909. The photo, taken from the perspective of the grandstands midway down the right-field foul line, pictures the entire infield, where nearly all of the players can be seen at their respective positions, as well as the batter. The Velox stamp box displayed on the reverse dates to the 1907-1914 manufacturing period; however, the postcard can be more narrowly dated to the three-year period 1907-1909 because of the wooden support columns shown here. League Park was rebuilt with concrete and steel prior to the start of the 1910 season. This is the first example of this postcard we have ever offered and we cannot recall the last time we have seen another at auction. The postcard (5.5 x 3.5 inches), which has not been addressed or mailed, displays the number “33” lightly written in pencil on the reverse. Excellent condition overall. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
