Original large-format team photo of the 1928 World Champion New York Yankees. The enormous image, which measures 35 x 23.5 inches (visible dimensions), captures 28 team members posing together in front of the grandstand, including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, manager Miller Huggins, Tony Lazzeri, Bill Dickey, Waite Hoyt, Earle Combs, Leo Durocher, Mark Koenig, Bob Meusel, Pat Collins, Joe Dugan, Johnny Grabowski, and Tom Zachary. The photographer's credit and date ("Cosmo News Foto, N.Y. 1928") appears in the lower-right corner. The only other example of this original large-format 1928 New York Yankees team photo we have seen appeared as Lot 633 in Sotheby's 1999 auction of the famous Barry Halper Collection. The Halper example had hung in the offices of Yankee Stadium and was removed prior to the stadium's renovation in 1973. While we cannot state with certainty, we believe that the offered example also originates from Yankee Stadium. Like the one that appeared in the Halper auction, this photo is housed in a heavy wood frame and one can clearly see the outline along the base of the frame where a metal plaque was removed (which almost certainly identified the team and year). Also, this piece has a unique provenance. According to our consignor, it once belonged to "Officer Joe Bolton," who was the host of daytime children's programing on WPIX in New York City from the 1950s through the early 1970s. WPIX was the network that also broadcast New York Yankees games, so it seems plausible that Bolton would have had access to Yankee Stadium items that were being removed during the stadium's reconstruction in 1973. Upon his retirement in 1974, Bolton donated the piece to the Grande Saloon in Clifton, New Jersey, where it has been on display until now. Original team photos of this size from the 1920s are exceedingly rare, and the fact that this example pictures one of the greatest teams in Yankees history only adds to both its significance and desirability. This is the ultimate New York Yankees display piece dating from the club's 1927-1928 dynasty and one that would be the centerpiece of any wall on which it hangs. The photo, which is printed on heavy cardboard stock, displays a few small edge tears/chips and abrasions, as well as minor, light staining throughout. In Good condition overall. Despite the flaws, the photo offers outstanding clarity and contrast, and presents at a much higher level than that suggested by its technically accurate grade. The well-worn frame (38.5 x 26.5 inches) displays a number of large mounting holes along the perimeter. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from the owner of the Grande Saloon. The substantial size/weight of this item requires that there will be a shipping charge for this lot. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
