The 1883 National League Detroit Wolverines are commemorated on this rare photographic team cabinet card featuring cameo portraits of 13 team members, including Hall of Famer Ned Hanlon. Each player's name and position is printed below his respective image. The 13 team members pictured here are manager J. C. Chapman, Ned Hanlon, Charlie Bennett, Joe Quest, Sadie Houck, Tom Mansell, Sam Trott, Martin Powell, Joe Farrell, Dick Burns, Stump Weidman, George Wood, and Mike DePangher. The team name, "Detroits," is printed above Chapman's portrait. Produced by "Bracy, Diehl & Co., Photographers," of Detroit, Michigan, as noted in print on both the photo and mount (front and reverse). Although no year is listed, it can be accurately dated to 1883 because that was the only season in which Joe Quest played for Detroit. Quest played in 37 games for the Wolverines before jumping to the St. Louis Browns of the American Association in 1883; therefore, this cabinet was obviously produced early in the season. This is the first example of this particular cabinet that we have ever handled. (The Wolverines were founded in 1881.) The card (4.25 x 6.5 inches) displays a few light creases, minor toning, and a small area of surface-paper loss on the reverse. Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
