Graded GOOD 30 by SGC (submitted by REA). 1887 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card of Hall of Famer Dan Brouthers with Boston, posed (#43-2) in front of an elaborate studio backdrop. We are very familiar with this particular card as this is the second time we have had the privilege of offering this gem. This card originally appeared as Lot #38 in REA's Spring 2017 auction (one of the highlights from a fresh-to-the-hobby find of fifteen N173 cards), having been consigned by a non-collector who discovered the card among the possessions of his grandfather. It has been consigned to this auction directly from the purchaser at that sale. This is one of the most impressive of all Dan Brouthers cards. The image on this card is extraordinarily bold with extremely strong contrast. The mount has two creases, one on the upper left corner, and the other is on the lower right corner. Light soiling on the front and back and some minor surface wear on the bottom border, which has affected some of the lettering on the Goodwin advertisement. Brouthers was a five-time batting champion who led the National League in slugging percentage each of his first six full seasons, and is one of the most prominent of all nineteenth-century Hall of Famers. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+.
