Graded FAIR 1.5 by SGC. 1888 N173 Old Judge cabinet card featuring Baltimore Orioles manager “Bald” Billy Barnie in a striking portrait pose (#21-1, the only pose of Barnie featured in the series). Barnie managed the Orioles of the American Association from 1883 to 1891. After leaving the Orioles, he managed the Washington Senators, Louisville Colonels, and Brooklyn Bridegrooms. All N173 Old Judge cabinets are naturally rare, but this is a particularly noteworthy example as it features a manager. Managers tend to jump out as special and unusual in any collection of Old Judges, in part because of the fancy street clothes (as seen here) in which the subjects are usually pictured. They are naturally a very popular subset of Old Judge collecting. The offered example displays outstanding photo quality and has an Excellent appearance from the front. The blank reverse shows evidence of scrapbook removal. This is an extremely striking and rare N173 example that would be a significant addition to any Old Judge cabinet card collection or serve as an ideal sample from one of the most revered and substantial of all nineteenth-century baseball-card issues.
