Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Stunning E223 example of New York Giants Hall of Famer John Ward! To the best of our knowledge this is one of only two examples known to exist. This is a remarkable card in all respects, and one that (as can easily be seen) presents far better than its technical grade. This card is a gem! Their small size (1 x 2.25 inches) and the fact that G & Bs were issued with gum as opposed to tobacco make this set one of the most distinctive of all pre-1900 baseball card issues. G & Bs are also one of the rarest of all 19th-century issues. This example of Hall of Famer John Ward is one of the most prominent stars from this unusual set. This is a photographic portrait variety, which is the most desirable type in the eyes of most collectors (G & Bs were also issued featuring woodcut "line drawing" illustrations). The card presents as Vg-Ex from the front: bright and clean, with outstanding photo contrast, minor corner wear (more so to the upper right), and an exceptionally strong overall visual appeal. It has been downgraded entirely due to a small spot of paper loss on the blank reverse, likely from having been in an album at some point in time. No creases. This is an extremely impressive sample of a very significant Hall of Famer from E223 G & B Chewing Gum, one of collecting's rarest and most highly regarded 19th-century card issues. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+.
