Presented is an extremely rare N566 Newsboy Tobacco cabinet of New York Giants outfielder George Van Haltren (#180). Van Haltren was a star player. His career spanned the years from 1887 to 1903 and his lifetime batting average of .316 makes him one of the best hitters of the nineteenth century. Many baseball scholars consider him to be worthy of induction to the Hall of Fame. Newsboy cabinet cards were issued by the National Tobacco Works of New York City to promote their Newsboy Tobacco brand. Newsboys are extremely rare and one of the very few baseball-card sets issued during the 1890s. The offered cabinet features a beautiful portrait photo with strong contrast. The mount has a crease in the upper right and a light stain in the lower left. The pencil notations on the blank reverse account for the assigned grade of FAIR 20 by SGC. This is a very attractive example of one of the era's most highly regarded stars from the desirable N566 Newsboy cabinet-card series. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
