Real-photo postcard capturing a game-in-progress scene from the grand opening of Forbes Field in Pittsburgh on June 30, 1909. Taken from the perspective of the right-field foul pole, the photo captures nearly the entire field and most of the grandstands. The particulars of the game are noted in the text below: “Forbes Field/Chicago vs. Pittsburg The Pirates New Home Attendance 30,028.” Unfortunately, the Cubs defeated the Pirates 3-2 that day. This particular postcard was used as a promotional piece by Willits & Felix, a local Pittsburgh grain-mill agency whose company name and address appear on the front. The postcard has been mailed by Willits & Felix to a mill company in Dagus Mines, Pennsylvania. Postmarked “Oct 4 1909.” This is just the third example of this particular Forbes Field advertising postcard we have ever seen. (Ironically, the last example we handled appeared as lot #198 in our Spring 2018 auction was consigned by a different collector but also originated from Willits & Felix with an identical message postmarked one day later.) The postcard (5.25 x 3.5 inches) displays light touches of wear at the corners but is in otherwise Excellent condition overall. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
