Presented is a rarely offered near-complete set of 1910 E90-2 American Caramel Pirates: ten different of the eleven cards in the set (missing only Wagner for completion, offered as a separate lot in this auction), all graded by SGC. These extremely distinctive and rare "E" cards feature members of the World Champion 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates. This is an extremely attractive mid-grade set (minus 1) with cards ranging in grade from SGC POOR 10 to SGC VG 40. Almost all have exceptional eye-appeal and many appear stronger than their technically accurate assigned grades. SGC Grading Composite: Five VG 40: Babe Adams, Fred Clarke (HOF, bright and crisp, with a virtually flawless image set against a striking red background, crease in the upper left and a light stain on the right border of the reverse), George Gibson, Tommy Leach, and Dots Miller. Three GOOD 30: Ham Hyatt, Nick Maddox, and Owen Wilson. One FAIR 20: Sam Leever. One POOR 10: Deacon Phillipe. Few caramel-card issues are as distinctive as E90-2 American Caramel Company cards. While closely related to the popular E90-1 American Caramel series, E90-2 is a separate set. All feature portraits of Pittsburgh Pirates players. The artworks which appear in E90-2 are among the most detailed of all caramel cards, and are far superior in quality at even a glance to that of most other caramel cards (including E90-1) and other card issues of the era. Though the cards in this set (minus 1) vary in grade, several cards are particularly strong, and most of even the lowest-graded examples have tremendous eye-appeal. A rare opportunity to acquire a near-complete set of ten different cards from one of the most desirable of all 1910-era candy issues. The equivalent SMR value for the assigned grades is $1,700. Total: 10 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
