Graded VG 3 by PSA. Presented is an extraordinary example of Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer Ty Cobb from the E94 George Close Candy set, one of the most popular and highly collected of all 1910-era caramel-card sets. The E94 Cobb is considered by many to be among Cobb's most classic cards. While at a glance E94s may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, even though they use many of the same subjects and poses. The E94 caramel-card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Mass. While the majority of the E94 cards do not have any sort of advertisement on the back, some have been found with overprints that make reference to this company. This remarkable card presents much better than suggested by its assigned grade. This card has a bold image set against a striking blue background, even wear on the corners, a faint crease that runs from the right edge through Cobb's wrist, and is very well centered. There is a tiny surface chip in the upper left of the blue background. The reverse features a checklist for the set. Caramel cards, of course, are rarely found in high grade. This is a superb example of the legendary Ty Cobb from this extremely scarce and classic 1910-era candy issue. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+.
