Rare cabinet photo of Detroit Wolverines third baseman Deacon White. This is the only example of this particular Deacon White cabinet photo we have ever seen and it comes with the provenance of originating directly from the personal collection of Larry Twitchell, who was a member of the Detroit Wolverines from 1886 to 1888. (This is one of many items from the Twitchell estate featured in this auction, all of which have been consigned directly by a Twitchell family member.) White is pictured in uniform as he poses for the studio portrait. White's name and position ("J. L. White, Third Base") are printed in script lettering along the base, below which, printed in block lettering, is his team affiliation: "Detroit Base Ball Club." The photographer's credit, "Tomlinson 236 Woodward Ave., Detroit," appears at the base of the mount. Astute collectors will notice that this image, which was taken by Tomlinson in 1886, was also used on Tomlinson's 1887 Detroit Wolverines World Champions team cabinet card. The photo is slightly toned and is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. The mount also displays light toning, as well as light, scattered foxing and minor edge wear. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open).
