Presented is a remarkable newly discovered N175 "Small" Gypsy Queen of Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Famer Pud Galvin! This card (along with six additional small N175 Gypsy Queens, all offered in this auction) was one of the highlights of a large totally untouched collection of nineteenth-century baseball tobacco cards consigned to this auction, which has remained in the family of the original owner for decades. Gypsy Queen was one of Goodwin's tobacco brands. This card is the same size and general format as N172 Old Judge, but with a slightly different design, and advertising for Goodwin's Gypsy Queen brand of tobacco. There has always been some confusion as to the catalog number of the smaller Gypsy Queens (similar in size to N172s and not to be confused with the even rarer large N175 Gypsy Queens, of which nine different cards are known) because the American Card Catalog does not distinguish between the two sizes of cards represented by "N175." This Pud Galvin example is encapsulated “Authentic” by SGC due to an irregular hand cut on all four sides. There is a purple ink stamp on the back (most likely the name of the original owner). Despite the obvious condition flaws, the card has a striking appearance and still displays bold contrast. This card represents a unique opportunity to acquire an almost never offered Hall of Famer example from this unusual Old Judge-related nineteenth-century issue. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
