Graded VG 3 by SGC (submitted by REA). Presented is a remarkable newly discovered N175 "Small" Gypsy Queen of New York Giants Hall of Famer Tim Keefe featured in a horizontal pose with teammate Danny Richardson. This card (along with six additional small N175 Gypsy Queens, all offered in this auction) was one of the highlights of a large totally untouched collection of nineteenth-century baseball tobacco cards consigned to this auction, which has remained in the family of the original owner for decades. Gypsy Queen was one of Goodwin's tobacco brands. This card is the same size and general format as N172 Old Judge, but with a slightly different design, and advertising for Goodwin's Gypsy Queen brand of tobacco. There has always been some confusion as to the catalog number of the smaller Gypsy Queens (similar in size to N172s and not to be confused with the even rarer large N175 Gypsy Queens, of which nine different cards are known) because the American Card Catalog does not distinguish between the two sizes of cards represented by "N175." All N175 Gypsy Queens are rare and unusual, but this is also a horizontal example and a two-player pose (including one Hall of Famer), making this card all the more distinctive in numerous ways. This card displays superb photo quality, even corner wear, and a stray ink mark and small stain on the blank reverse. This is one of the few double-player pose N175 Gypsy Queens, and among the even rarer ones featuring a Hall of Famer. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
