Rare N175 "Small" Gypsy Queen of Sam Crane (Indianapolis). This card is the same size and general format as N172 Old Judge, but with a slightly distinctive design, and advertising for Goodwin's Gypsy Queen brand of tobacco. There has always been some confusion as to the catalog number of the smaller Gypsy Queens (similar in size to N172s and not to be confused with the even rarer large-sized N175 Gypsy Queens, of which nine different cards are known) because the ACC does not distinguish between the two sizes of cards represented by "N175." This card is part of a fresh-to-the-hobby collection of N172s and N175s consigned to REA for sale in this auction as well as the summer auction. This card has a strong image, a quality highly prized among nineteenth-century collectors. Graded GOOD+ 2.5 by SGC (submitted by REA), the card displays even wear at the corners and a tiny surface crease in the extreme upper right, which accounts for the grade. The blank reverse shows a few age spots but is otherwise clean. This is a sharp-looking sample from this rare and unusual Old Judge-related nineteenth-century issue. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
