Incredibly rare Yankees team sweater from circa 1921 and is one of only two examples known to exist. This is an extraordinary early team sweater, of spectacular quality, from an era in which team sweaters were as important a part of a ballplayer’s wardrobe as his uniform and cap. These sweaters were issued by teams in the days before team jackets, and were proudly worn by players on the sidelines, and while warming up, and were of such a high quality that they were often kept by players for use in the off-season. Many panoramic photographs from the 1910 to 1925 era show entire teams with all players wearing their matching team sweaters. Only a handful of these beautifully designed heavy knit sweaters from any team have survived, and fewer still are Yankees sweaters. This is an extraordinary original example issued by the pennant-winning 1921 New York Yankees. 1921 is a particularly significant year for the Yankees as this was their first pennant-winning season. Though they lost to the Giants in the World Series, this was the year in which the great Yankee Dynasty began. The steel grey sweater has a purple shawl collar, cuffs, and front rim. The interlocking “NY” logo appears in a lighter purple on the left breast. The sweater is designed with two pockets, one on each side. The sweater is original in all respects, including manufacturer’s tag in collar and original celluloid buttons. This team sweater belonged to Yankees coach Frank Roth, who was with the Yankees as a coach in 1921 and 1922. This extraordinary team-issued garment was previously exhibited at the National Sports Gallery in Washington, D.C. In Excellent condition. LOA from Dan Knoll & Dave Bushing/SCD Authentic. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$10,000.
