Spalding "Babe Ruth Home Run Special" ball beautifully signed by Babe Ruth in black fountain pen across the sweet spot. Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA/DNA. The autograph is graded MINT 9 and the ball is graded EX-MT 6, for an overall grade of NM-MT 8. (As noted in its accompanying LOA, PSA/DNA can, at its discretion, either add or subtract a half point for eye appeal, as they have done here). Spalding's "Babe Ruth Home Run Special" ball was one of the company's most popular retail balls during the 1930s, which is no surprise, given Ruth's enormous star power at the time. The most attractive aspect of the ball was that Ruth's stamped facsimile signature was featured within the design of the ball label, so every kid could own a "signed" Ruth ball. For the truly fortunate, meeting Ruth in person allowed for the possibility of adding an authentic Ruth autograph on the ball, which made it truly special. While we will never know the circumstance regarding the signing of this ball, one think we do know for certain is that it was a treasured keepsake by the original. That fact is evident by the great pains he or she made to keep it free from any damage. The strength of the signature indicates that the ball was stored in a manner that avoided harsh light, and the ball was obviously never played with and only lightly handled over the years. Ruth single-signed balls have never been considered rare in the hobby; however, high-grade examples such as this are seldom encountered and the opportunities to acquire them are few and far between. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Reserve $10,000. Estimate (open).
