Original George Burke photo of Lou Gehrig, beautifully inscribed and signed by Gehrig in black fountain pen. PSA/DNA has certified both the handwriting and signature, with the signature assigned a grade of MINT 9. The Matte finish photograph pictures Gehrig in uniform as he smiles into the camera. Gehrig has inscribed the piece "To Ben/In Appreciation/of your many kindnesses/Cordially/Lou Gehrig." While both the text and signature are boldly scripted, the contrast between the black ink and light color of Gehrig's uniform makes the inscription all the more impressive. This is one of the finest Gehrig-signed photos we have ever seen and one that would appeal to even the most discriminating collector. It should be noted that our consignor obtained this piece decades ago and it has remained in his sole possession since that time. The photo (8.25 x 11 inches; visible dimensions) displays an irregularly shaped tear (approximately one square inch; no paper loss) near the base (easily addressed by professional restoration if so desired) and a few minor surface wrinkles, none of which detract in the least from its overall Excellent appearance. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 14 x 17 inches. Full LOAs from PSA/DNA and from Steve Grad and Brian Sobrero/Beckett Authentication Services. Reserve $10,000. Estimate (open).
