Presented is an attractive 1889 N172 Old Judge of Hall of Famer “Smiling” Mickey Welch of the New York Giants (pose #486-2). This card originates from a new-to-the-hobby collection of nineteenth-century cards that had been carefully saved in the pages of a scrapbook for over a century. This card was carefully removed from the scrapbook by a professional conservator using deionized water. It was submitted to SGC for grading with this information and SGC graded the card VG 3. The offered card has outstanding photo quality, superb clarity, and a flawless surface. Fresh and crisp, but modestly graded due to honest corner wear and evidence of scrapbook removal on the blank reverse. This type of flaw practically "comes with the territory" for most Old Judges, and advanced collectors concern themselves more with the image quality when assessing the desirability of a given card. This is a high quality, but perhaps relatively affordable due to its modest assigned grade, example of Hall of Famer "Smiling" Mickey Welch, one of the most legendary Hall of Fame pitchers of the nineteenth century. Welch was the Major League's third 300-game winner. During his thirteen Major League seasons, he won twenty or more games nine times, including seven straight years. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1973. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
