Extremely appealing 1889 N172 Old Judge baseball card featuring legendary New York Giants manager James Mutrie in all his glory. This card originates from a new-to-the-hobby collection of nineteenth-century cards that had been carefully saved in the pages of a scrapbook for over a century. This card was carefully removed from the scrapbook by a professional conservator using deionized water. It was submitted to SGC for grading with this information and SGC graded the card GOOD 2. Mutrie was always well known for his fine dress and immaculate grooming, both of which are clearly evident on his Old Judge baseball card. One of the leading figures in the game in the 1880s, Mutrie led the prominent New York club to three championships during that decade. Bright and crisp, with four square corners (surface chip on the tip of the lower right), strong photo quality, and excellent centering. The blank reverse shows evidence of scrapbook removal. An appealing and very distinctive example from the most popular set of the era. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
