Presented is an extremely rare double-player card featuring John Reilly and "Little Nick" Nicol (pose #346-7) of the Cincinnati Red Stockings. This card originates from a new-to-the-hobby collection of nineteenth-century cards that had been carefully saved in the pages of a scrapbook for over a century. This card was carefully removed from the scrapbook by a professional conservator using deionized water. It was submitted to SGC for grading with this information and SGC graded the card FAIR 1.5. According to The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890), the definitive book on Old Judges by Jay Miller, Joe Gonsowski, and Richard Masson, there are twenty-three different cards on which Goodwin & Co. identifies both players by name (as is the case with the offered example). Approximately twenty-seven other cards within the set feature a second player but list only one player on the card. The offered card presents with superb photo contrast and clarity, even corner wear, and centering toward the right. The blank reverse has back damage from scrapbook removal. This "comes with the territory" when collecting nineteenth-century cards, and many N172 collectors only concern themselves with the photo quality, which in this case is tremendous! This a rarely offered and unusual N172 example that would be a worthy addition to even the most advanced Old Judge collection! Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
