Extremely desirable 1889 N172 Old Judge of legendary ballplayer-turned-evangelist Billy Sunday (#446-5, leaning-on-bat pose), with the Pittsburgh Nationals. This card originates from a new-to-the-hobby collection of nineteenth-century cards that had been carefully saved in the pages of a scrapbook for over a century. This card was carefully removed from the scrapbook by a professional conservator using deionized water. It was submitted to SGC for grading with this information and SGC graded the card VG 3. With a copyright date of 1888, the card was issued during Sunday's first season with Pittsburgh; up to that point, he had spent his entire Major League career as a backup outfielder with the powerhouse Chicago Nationals. It is interesting to note that Goodwin used a photograph of Sunday in his Chicago uniform, probably because a photo of him with Pittsburgh was not yet available, and airbrushed "Pittsburgh" on his uniform. This is a very pleasing example from this landmark issue of one of the nineteenth century's best-known players. Bright and clean, with even corner wear, centering toward the left, and light photo contrast in some areas. The blank reverse is fairly clean. This is a very high quality Old Judge example of the legendary Billy Sunday. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
