Graded VG/EX 4 by SGC (submitted by REA). Extremely attractive N172 Old Judge card of Hall of Famer Billy Hamilton (pose #210-4). According to The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890), the definitive book on Old Judges by Jay Miller, Joe Gonsowski, and Richard Masson, Hamilton ranks as the eighth-rarest Hall of Famer (out of twenty-eight) in the entire N172 set. While Hamilton is an extremely scarce Hall of Famer in the Old Judge series, this is a far rarer and more significant example than is apparent at a glance. This is an 1890 Old Judge! All 1890 Old Judges are exceedingly rare, and this is a particularly significant card. The "Philadelphia NL" designation, which is so unusual, is found only on his almost impossibly rare 1890 Old Judge card. All 1890 Old Judges are rare, and almost all suffer from very poor contrast. The contrast on this example, while not strong compared to many N172s from earlier years, is slightly better than that of most 1890 Old Judge cards. Clean front, no major creases ( a couple very faint surface wrinkles on back), with four strong corners and centering toward the left. There is a slight tilt to the picture. The blank reverse is clean with very minor toning. An outstanding and extremely rare 1890 N172 example of Billy Hamilton worthy of any advanced N172, Hall of Fame, or nineteenth-century card collection. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
