This N172 Old Judge of George Winkleman (pose #505-1) is distinguished not for its condition but for its extreme rarity. This card originates from a new-to-the-hobby collection of nineteenth-century cards that had been carefully saved in the pages of a scrapbook for over a century. This card was carefully removed from the scrapbook by a professional conservator using deionized water. It was submitted to SGC for grading with this information and SGC graded the card GOOD 2. According to the comprehensive book The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890) - referred to commonly as the "Old Judge Book," Winkleman is the sixteenth rarest subject (outside of the virtually impossible eighteen California League cards) in the entire N172 set. Aside from the example used as an illustration in the "Old Judge Book," this is the first example we have ever seen of this card, which bears an 1888 copyright in the photo and depicts Winkleman as a pitcher for Hartford from the Atlantic Association. The card has even wear on corners (more heavily worn on the upper right) and strong photo contrast. The blank reverse has some minor soiling. Regardless of its condition, this card will be of special interest to extremely advanced Old Judge collectors. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
