Graded NM 7 by PSA. This is the ONLY example graded at this level with none higher! Superb 1889 N172 Old Judge example of New York Giants Hall of Famer Tim Keefe (pose #251-4). Keefe had 35 victories (against just 19 defeats) in 1887. His records in previous years were equally impressive: 42 in 1886, 37 in 1885, 37 in 1884, and 41 in 1883. These seasons together, from 1883 to 1887, may have been the most dominating five seasons for any pitcher in any era. He went on to win a total of 344 games in just 14 years (1880-1893). The offered example boasts a superb image with outstanding detail, four strong corners, and near-perfect centering. The blank reverse is clean overall. It should be noted that this card was purchased at auction by our consignor in the current holder, and since that time, information has come to light that speculates this card may have originally been graded at a lesser level due to staining on the back. Without this information, there was nothing on the card that suggested it had been altered in any way. Under close examination, we note extremely faint traces of discoloration on the blank reverse. We submitted the card to PSA for additional review, and they determined the card shows no evidence of alteration and meets their criteria for the NM 7 grade. This is an extremely attractive example that would be at home in any nineteenth-century, Old Judge, or Hall of Fame collection! Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+.
