N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet proof of outfielder Tom Poorman as a member of the Philadelphia Athletics. Produced by Gilbert & Bacon Photographic Studios of Philadelphia, the card is embossed "Copyrighted 1888, Goodwin & Co." in the lower left. Gilbert & Bacon was the premier baseball photographic studio in Philadelphia during the 1880s, and provided many images for use by Goodwin in the N172 and N173 Old Judge series. The "proof" cabinets produced by Gilbert & Bacon were not only provided to Goodwin and other companies for their commercial use, but were also often given to players, family, or made available to the public as a means of advertising for the studio. In the offered cabinet photo, which offers exceptional clarity,Poorman is depicted holding a ball in a throwing pose (pose #371-3). A very elaborate advertisement for Gilbert & Bacon appears on the reverse. Poorman played with Philadelphia of the American Association in both 1887 and 1888, which marked the final two seasons of his six-year Major League career. Prior to his joining Philadelphia, Poorman played with Buffalo (1880), Chicago (1880), and Boston (1885-1886) of the National League, and Toledo (1884) of the American Association. He finished his career with 12 home runs, 172 RBI, and a .244 lifetime average. The cabinet card (4.25 x 6.5 inches) displays a tiny stain along the base of the mount. Graded VG-EX+ 4.5 by SGC.
