Presented is a remarkable newly discovered N175 "Small" Gypsy Queen of Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Famer Pud Galvin! This card originates from a new-to-the-hobby collection of nineteenth-century cards that had been carefully saved in the pages of a scrapbook for over a century. This card was carefully removed from the scrapbook by a professional conservator using deionized water. It was submitted to SGC for grading with this information and SGC encapsulated the card as "Authentic." Gypsy Queen was one of Goodwin's tobacco brands. This card is the same size and general format as N172 Old Judge, but with a slightly different design, and advertising for Goodwin's Gypsy Queen brand of tobacco. There has always been some confusion as to the catalog number of the smaller Gypsy Queens (similar in size to N172s and not to be confused with the even rarer large N175 Gypsy Queens, of which nine different cards are known) because the American Card Catalog does not distinguish between the two sizes of cards represented by "N175." The offered card has an irregular cut along the bottom, which has partially impacted the text. A crease extends across the lower portion (more visible from the back) and the blank reverse has evidence of scrapbook removal. Despite the obvious condition flaws, the card has a striking appearance and still displays bold contrast. This card represents a unique opportunity to acquire an almost never offered Hall of Famer example from this unusual Old Judge-related nineteenth-century issue. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
