Graded FAIR 1.5 by SGC (submitted by REA). Rare N175 "Small" Gypsy Queen of star player Ned Williamson, Chicago shortstop (#502-3), posed in front of an elaborate studio backdrop. This card is the same size and general format as N172 Old Judge, but with a slightly distinctive design, and advertising for Goodwin's Gypsy Queen brand of tobacco. There has always been some confusion as to the catalog number of the smaller Gypsy Queens (similar in size to N172s and not to be confused with the even rarer large-sized N175 Gypsy Queens, of which nine different cards are known) because the ACC does not distinguish between the two sizes of cards represented by "N175." This is a fresh-to-the-hobby example consigned to this auction by the family of the original owner. This card has an extremely strong image, a quality highly prized among nineteenth-century collectors. Graded FAIR 1.5 by SGC (submitted by REA), the card displays even touches of wear at the corners and creasing above his image. The blank reverse has several spots of toning which accounts for the grade. This is an extremely sharp-looking sample from this rare and unusual Old Judge-related nineteenth-century issue.
